1.5-A buck converter offers space saving benefits
July 15, 2010 | Paul Buckley | 222901209
A 1.5-A rated buck converter that operates at a fixed switching frequency of 1.4 MHz has been introduced by Diodes Incorporated to enable designers to reduce circuit footprints in a range of products including set top boxes, modems and distributed power systems.
The reduction in size of the inductor and other standard external components resulting from the higher operating frequency, combined with the converter's compact SO-8 packaging and integrated low RDSON power MOSFET switch means significant board space savings can be achieved. A minimized external component count also provides increased flexibility in circuit design.
Characterized by its low series resistance, the AP5101 delivers a constant output current up to a peak of 1.5 A for an efficiency as high as 92 percent, over a wide input supply range of 4.75 V to 22 V. A fast transient response eases loop stabilisation requirements and the output is adjustable from 0.81V to 15V.
The AP5101 is self-protected through cycle-by-cycle current limiting and thermal shut down protection, ensuring long term product reliability. The converter has an enable pin allowing it to be switched off into a standby mode, consuming just 0.1 µA.
Pricing
The AP5101 buck converter from Diodes Incorporated is priced at 0.19 US Dollars each in 10,000 piece quantities.
