All-in-one power solution offers twin benefits
April 27, 2010 | Paul Buckley | 222900868
Maxim Integrated Products has introduced a highly integrated power solution that combines a multichemistry battery charger with dual Quick-PWM step-down controllers.
The integration saves board space and reduces component cost by eliminating the need for separate ICs. The battery charger's switching frequency is rated for operation up to 1.2 MHz to allow the use of smaller inductors. Dual SMPSs with dual keep-alive linear regulators supply system power in the off, standby, and alive states. With this high level of integration, the MAX17085B is well suited for notebooks, UMPCs, MIDs, and other portable applications in which space and
component cost are critical.
The charge-voltage setting is adjustable and accurate to ±0.4 percent. The charge current is also adjustable by an analog or PWM input. Internal 5V/100 mA and 3.3V/50 mA LDOs generate always-on power supplies. Overvoltage, undervoltage, thermal, and other fault-protection features are also included.
Availability and Pricing
The MAX17085B is available in a space-saving, 5 mm x 5 mm, 40-pin TQFN package with an exposed pad. The device is fully specified over the -40 to +105 degrees Celsius temperature range. Prices start at 2.45 US Dollars (1000-up, FOB USA). An evaluation kit with recommended external components is available to reduce design time.
