This article serves as a guide to decide on the architecture of a basic utility meter that can serve the basic purposes and applications of the present-day basic utility metering, including measurement of consumption, tamper protection, time keeping, display and transmission of the meter-reading. It looks at the components of such a meter, including the analog front end, flow/gas measurement unit, tamper protection and detection logic, real time clock, communication peripherals, display driver, core functions, and memory.

Sunil Deep Maheshwari has worked as a Design Engineer at Freescale Semiconductor, Inc. for nearly three years. He has worked on architectures ranging from Digital Signal Controller, Power Train to Metering.
