Smart Community Alliance launched in Japan for smart grid business

April 21, 2010 | Julien Happich | 222900841
With the aim of combining public- and private-sector strengths to sell Japan's technology and systems to emerging smart-grid-related markets worldwide, the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) established yesterday the Japan Smart Community Alliance (JSCA), whose 287-strong membership comprises companies, universities and other organizations.

Nine companies - Itochu, Hitachi, JGC, Mitsubishi Electric, Panasonic, Tokyo Gas, Tokyo Electric, Toshiba and Toyota - form the managing board of the alliance. At the inaugural ceremony, Masayuki Naoshima, the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, said, "METI will provide full support for the alliance's activities."

The alliance has set up four working groups to plot strategy, actively participate in international standardization, study smart houses, a key element in a smart grid, and formulate an R&D roadmap. As its first activity, the Alliance will dispatch a mission consisting of 35 member companies and METI and NEDO officials to the United States this month.

NEDO also plans to hold an international workshop in June in Tokyo. Coinciding with the Smart Grid Exhibition 2010 to be held in Tokyo from June 16-18, NEDO, which is one of the organizers of the exhibition, will hold the Smart Grid Summit (provisional name) at the same venue.
